I saw this sign the other day in San Diego and thought it might work for me. After plenty of behind-the-scenes work and client consulting and a media career, I'm now in the public relations and social media game.
I certainly have a vision and plan for my business and I know why I started it. For one, we live in a time when fashion, beauty, technology, food, celebrity music, film, sports, television and entertainment have all come together or intersected each other like the crust on an apple pie. I've always wanted to help clients better navigate these realms and get their messages to the public in smart ways.
I also wanted a business that would allow me to pursue my film and television projects (and boy, do we have some good ones in development) as well as allow me to offer my expertise, experience and creativity to other businesses, individuals and brands in need of PR, marketing and social media strategies from an agency with deep roots in research, storytelling, brand development and pop culture.
Marques Harper PR is the in-house public relations, social media and consulting agency of Mackelson Productions LLC, my company that's based in the entertainment capital of the world, Los Angeles. I oversee both of them. While MHPR is an in-house agency, I always had a vision for it beyond my office walls: We do freelance PR and social media messaging and business consulting for a variety of companies and brands.
My company's website, MarquesHarper.com, is part of my greater vision for Mackelson Productions and comes from an idea I had years ago for a website that would allow me to mix my social streams, information about my business ventures, video content, photography, blog content from me and guest bloggers, and assorted pop culture nibbles.
My original website development team loved my concept because the site I envisioned hadn't been done before to the extent I wanted. I didn't want to start a magazine, and a website stuffed with the things I know about and love made sense and was financially feasible. This digital format will allow me to change the site without compromising my ideas as I change and grow.
Who knows where this new journey will take me and what clients will come my way in Los Angeles, Austin and from elsewhere. What I know for sure is that everyone has a story, every business, every person and every brand, and many times making sense of that message and putting it into a fleshed-out, smart package that consumers and readers and followers want to understand and be a part of takes tremendous amounts of work, creativity, support and laser-sharp focus.
For me, a sign like the one above also indicates that after a period of hard work and decisions and some trial-and-error that some creation is now ready to sprout and find its groove and hopefully serve a long line of clients.
This particular neon sign is from Harvey Milk's American Diner, a new San Diego restaurant that pays homage to the slain gay politician from San Francisco and serves hungry customers diner fare such as chicken fried steak, breakfast quesadillas and meatloaf sandwiches.
I wanted to post the photo to simply say this: After years of working on the dream for MHPR, Mackelson Productions and MarquesHarper.com and moving my company to L.A., we are now a reality and a player in an already busy ballgame. As the leader of the team, I want us to help new clients get their social media and PR messaging into the world and serve clients by helping them develop a strong game plan for their businesses, products or brands.
I'm in the business of telling stories and getting those stories attention. I have been my entire life including my 20 years in the media world. As I like to say in the office, "Your story matters. Now let's tell the world."
Now open for business. How may I help you?
